BOREAS Dry Cooling Systems

BOREAS® dry cooling systems are designed for facilities operating with lower dry bulb temperatures and/or higher outbound process fluid temperatures. BOREAS systems deliver safe, dependable, rugged and efficient process cooling.

How It Works

BOREAS dry cooling systems circulate process fluid through bundles of copper tubing while large fans pull ambient air across the fins to reject heat from the process fluid. Smart Programming continuously adjusts fan staging or fan speed as cooling demands change, helping facilities optimize energy consumption while maintaining stable operating temperatures.

Because BOREAS systems operate entirely in dry mode without water-assisted cooling, they are particularly well suited for facilities operating in cooler climates, water-restricted regions, or applications where eliminating water usage and simplifying maintenance are primary operational goals.

NIMBUS™ provides BOREAS dry cooling systems in a variety of configurations to accommodate the spatial and cooling requirements of nearly any facility.

Why It's better

BOREAS systems deliver years of efficient cooling while minimizing the risk of Legionnaires’ disease, conserving water and eliminating the costly maintenance programs associated with traditional evaporative coolers.

All BOREAS systems can be upgraded to VIRGA™ adiabatic systems if needs or local legal requirements change.

Built for Real-World Conditions

BOREAS systems are engineered to perform across a wide range of environmental and operational conditions, not just ideal installations. Common concerns addressed by design:
  • High-temperature or water-restricted environments: Fully dry operation eliminates water consumption while supporting dependable cooling performance in facilities prioritizing water conservation or simplified maintenance programs.
  • Dusty or debris-prone environments: Optional debris screens help protect coils from cottonwood, industrial particulate, hail, and airborne contaminants that can impact long-term system performance.
  • Constrained urban sites: Multiple configurations, including horizontal-airflow and narrow-profile models, allow BOREAS systems to fit rooftops, mechanical yards, and installations with limited vertical or horizontal space.
  • High-volume industrial loads: Modular, parallel-unit configurations allow systems to scale from individual process applications to large industrial campuses while maintaining controllability and operational flexibility.
  • Evolving operational requirements: All BOREAS systems can be upgraded to VIRGA™ adiabatic systems if cooling demands, climate conditions, or regulatory requirements change in the future.

Features & Benefits

  • Fans with Smart Programming cycle on and off in stages (AC) or ramp up and down in speed (EC/AC with VFD) as needed to maintain optimal energy consumption
  • EC or AC Fan Motors (with or without VFD) minimize energy consumption (BOREAS H-Series only available with EC)
  • Stainless Steel Frame ensures years of operation compared to traditional dry coolers
  • Easy Access Lift Points are bolted to the internal structure of every fan section for quick, simple and safe lifting and positioning
  • UL/UL-C Industrial Control Panels custom-built by NIMBUS offer direct 460V, 208V or 575V applications as standard with fully contained PLC or digital controls
  • Scalable Heat Rejection from 5 tons to 540 tons per unit and parallel-unit configurations engineered to support larger project loads without sacrificing efficiency or controllability
  • Minimal Footprint requirements are achieved through BOREAS’ efficient dry cooling design, allowing facilities to meet cooling demands with fewer units and simplified layout planning compared to traditional dry cooler installations

Ready Day One

BOREAS systems arrive at the installation site pre-programmed to the customer’s specifications with the leaving fluid temperature sensors installed and wired.

Adaptable to Changing Operational Needs

All BOREAS systems can be upgraded to VIRGA™ adiabatic systems if operational requirements, climate conditions, or local regulations evolve over time. This flexible upgrade path allows facilities to adapt cooling strategies without requiring complete infrastructure replacement.

Configurations

Contact a representative today to learn which type of cooling solution is best suited for your operational requirements.

For traditional cooling needs, features 32.5-inch, 70-inch or 90-inch fin heights. Multiple units may be staged in parallel configurations to support larger facility or campus-scale cooling loads.
For limited-height environments or rooftop installations with overhead clearance restrictions, the horizontal airflow design maximizes cooling capacity within compact vertical footprints and features a 72.5-inch fin height.
For limited-width environments, the tall, narrow profile delivers high-capacity cooling in constrained horizontal spaces and features a 180-inch fin height.

Options and Components

Controls and Fans

All BOREAS cooling systems feature UL/UL-C industrial control panels custom-built by NIMBUS (UL-Certified). Panels are installed either directly on the cooling system or remotely. Controls installed directly on the cooling system are fully contained, requiring only the primary power connection on site. NIMBUS’ cooling systems feature Type 3R-rated enclosures as standard, with Type 4 and Type 4X options available.

BOREAS units outfitted with AC fans include digital controls as standard. PLC (programmable logic controllers) controls and VFD (variable frequency drive) are available as upgrades or no controls can be selected if desired. Units outfitted with EC fans come standard with PLC controls. Standard EC fan packages and AC fan packages upgraded with PLC controls and VFD provide fan speed modulation, while standard AC fan packages with digital controls feature “on/off” fan staging. AC and EC packages may be swapped at any time on select BOREAS models.

AC fan packages are available with low noise blades. This may require a motor swap to avoid potential derate of the unit capacity. Select EC fan packages offer sound attenuation modules as well.

Debris Screens

Available for any model to protect coils from cottonwood, hail, industrial particulate, and other airborne debris. Recommended for installations near agricultural operations, construction zones, manufacturing facilities, or environments with elevated airborne contaminants.
